It's that magical time of year with so much added excitement in the air! Holiday fun, travel and family visits to name a few. It can also be an overwhelming season for kids, especially our older students. The workload is at its height and first semester exams are within range. Some schools have exams before break so December can be quite hectic leading up to testing. Other students will need to continue studying over the break in order to maintain skills for tests in the new year.
The added busyness and change in routines this season can add to academic struggles and anxieties. Students thrive on strong schedules, so consistency is key. We understand that keeping a solid routine can be challenging, and that is where we are happy to help!
We can build a tutoring schedule that fits your family's need with one of our qualified tutors. The reoccurring once weekly, or multiple weekly sessions, can make it easier for your student to carve out the needed hour study time and be able to ask questions and receive proper one-on-one support. Putting this into the family's routine and calendar makes it part of your student's "normal" process. With the right tutor match it can make learning a little more enjoyable too.
Here are a few simple tips to try to keep academics on track this holiday season. Your child's tutor will help do this with them as well!
Use a planner and visuals (stickers, poster board, etc) to plan - whatever method works for your family. It's the first of the month, and the perfect time to take 15 minutes together and write out EVERYTHING you know that is happening this month (tests, papers due, special activities, grandma's arrival -- you name it!) This is great practice for students struggling to be organized. Their tutor can help monitor this plan and strategize with them for studying and accomplishing tasks with adequate time.
Reward the goals your student meets! This time of year can be a blur and makes it challenging to know which way is up, but if they accomplish a paper, do well on a test -- celebrate even if it's something simple!
Get the wiggles out! Sometimes this is necessary even during sessions with our younger. This season adds excitement and usually sugar to their diets so it's completely normal to take those stretch and exercise breaks after some focused work time. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain which will help them think clearer too.
Try to keep the sleep routine normal during the school week (if possible). Sleep plays a real part in memory recall, energy and attitude for our students. Solid sleep days leading up to an exam can help your child be more confident and alert.
We know as parents you're already pulled in a million directions, so let us help keep some calm amongst the chaos to ensure your student has continued academic success this season. Reach out to us today to learn more!
