Your student has worked so hard to be this close to the end of another school year. We know you are so proud of how far they have come no matter how big (or small) the steps have been. We are certainly very proud of all of our students! Hundreds of hours spent on homework, studying and in the classroom over the past nine months and then BAM! They can soon slam the computer, books and backpack shut. It will be summer break!
We most certainly agree that students need the summertime for much needed stress-free fun. We all deserve time to relax! Unfortunately, without any sort of learning for months at a time, the summer setback can occur. All of the hard work a student has poured into grasping their math, or Spanish , or improving their handwriting this past year seems to have been "wasted" time. Some research suggests that the summer break time causes student achievement scores to decline by as much as one month's worth of school-year learning.
This doesn't have to happen! And the solutions is not complicated and does not require rigorous hours spent studying over your holiday.
We suggest making a simple plan for your student that will be realistic for the household to stick to. Whether it's a summer read of their choosing, math worksheet twice a week, watching a show/movie in Spanish to keep their skills sharp -- it is doable!
If you add in summer tutoring to this plan, your child is certain to start the next school year off with a true sense of preparedness. Regular sessions with your student's same tutor is quality time for them to revisit material they struggled with this past semester, but WITHOUT the stress of homework or an upcoming test. It is an ideal time to revisit any missed concepts and improve proficiency. Summer tutoring means dedicated time to focus on their cursive with fun, small writing tasks. It means the method for those math equations are so much more familiar when a harder level is introduced in August.
Plus, their tutoring session quantity and timing are built around your family's summer schedule and travel plans, (example: twice-weekly mid-morning sessions to review their math and introduce the next level early concepts). Your student knows those two days only require them to focus on math for one hour, and then they can enjoy more fun activities the rest of their day. Plus, our awesome team of tutors are great at making sessions much more bearable for each of their students.
Summer is also an excellent time to begin standardized test prep. Hopefully your student's weekly schedule is lighter in load than during the school year even if they are playing a summer sport or attending camps. You and their tutor can set a time to focus on ACT, SAT or even ISEE test prep without having to worry about them being tired from a full day of school too. When their test rolls around in the fall, there will be no need to "panic study". They will have spent months wisely dedicated to a little time each week. This adds up to a major impact on results.
If your child needs support in any subject, skill or test prep, we would love to chat with you more about our program. The only "summer slide" your child should experience needs to end in a swimming pool!
