We are very proud of all of our current and prior students. We wish every student with academic struggles could experience the power of great tutoring! We truly believe that working with one of our tutors makes a real difference in our students' lives by giving them the personal time and the right tools to improve their skills and ultimately their confidence. Time is important to note here. Improvement is a process! Building on those consistent sessions creates opportunity for each student's real progress.
As parents, it's important for us to know that sometimes students have to warm up to the idea of accepting help. Truthfully, even as adults we sometimes do too. That is okay! Research suggests that students as young as seven learn to associate needing help with a form of weakness. This makes them fear looking incompetent in front of others and in turn, they will avoid asking questions or will not seek additional help. What may be a small lack of understanding or weaker skillset, grows into a much bigger hurdle. This adds another layer to the already high amount of pressure they experience during these growing years.
At beam, we understand this initial hesitancy. We have also seen the worry and exhaustion from parents who are not sure where to begin with helping their child. Private tutoring is a perfect start -- your child will get the one-on-one time they need to focus on a particular study or skill, while working in a setting they are more comfortable, like their own home. They can ask whatever questions they want and not feel embarrassed. Our tutors take their time to get to know their students and to earn their trust, then build on their skills through consistent sessions and hard work, which in turn improves their confidence. This is why we always aim for the most ideal match for rapport between student and tutor. Tutors can also share suggestions with parents to continue support on days without a session.
Students in school during the thick of COVID have experienced an additional challenge from the lost one-on-one time in the classroom. This has had lasting effects for some. Frustration and lack of access to resources made it easier to shut down and fall behind the screen. Not to mention that today's classroom resources in general look so different than they did even 5 years ago. Some courses are taught without a physical textbook. Resources are in online portals with lessons on video. Even for the tech-savvy parent, it can be overwhelming to know how to help your student comprehend in this learning format. Our tutors are well-versed in the latest technologies and sources being used in the classroom. We can help your student find methods to organize and study that work for them. They can thrive even if their "classroom" is virtual.
If I could go back in time to my younger student self, I would most certainly want her to know she can and WILL do this. I would show her WHY it is okay to ask for help in those moments of feeling fear and pressure to figure things out on my own. As a parent, I want my kids to know that even into adulthood, we don't always have the answer. Whether in or out of the classroom, age 15 or age 75, I want them to know when and how to ask for the right help. Seeing a parent take this step through tutoring support for their student is a perfect example for them.
If your child is frustrated with schoolwork; shutting down with your offer to help; is struggling to retain material and not sure where to start; or just needs an academic boost with one-on-one time, we are here for your family! It is ALWAYS alright to ask for help!
