This is the start of a new semester. There are new concepts and light workloads for the first few weeks. That is the perfect time to take a break from studying, right?
WRONG!!
When students are given the choice between studying when there really isn't a lot of new material given in class, or maybe they already grasp the concepts, many of them will choose to just 'skip' studying. Over the years, I have seen first hand how much growth a student can have by staying on top of their coursework and studying on a consistent basis.
It really is the perfect time to preview material yet to be taught and develop study habits that will prevail when the workload does get heavy and bought towards midterms and finals.
Too many times I have gotten phone calls from parents in desperation because their child is so far behind. Procrastination can create a huge problem for students and their grades.
So, what should you do? It's simple....
DON'T WAIT!!
The time is now to study, even when it seems too easy. Keep on top of your grades and it will pay off in the end! Here are a few tips to help you avoid the pitfall of procrastination:
1- Set Up a Consistent and Daily Time for Study: Let's face it, schedules are super busy for kids these days. Encourage them, for example, to have the same time every Monday to study. Each day of the week may have a different time, but make sure that each day of the week has a set aside time for study.
2- Use ALL of that time: If they finish before the time is up, encourage them to clean out their binder, update their planner, preview new material, start studying for a test that may be 2 weeks way. Extra time can be so beneficial!
3- Don't Wait To Ask For Help: If they are just not getting a topic in class and seem frustrated, don't wait to get them help! Encourage them to as for help when needed so that they don't get behind of the pace of the class.
Having a personal tutor each week is also a great way to make sure that studying is consistent. That is why we format our tutoring sessions to the same day and time each week. Tutors are able to hold students accountable for adequate and organized study time.
