Summer can be the absolute best time to take advantage of tutoring sessions. This year, more than ever, it’s a great time to bridge any gaps that may exist from the past school year. Unfortunately, many of our students were faced with a year of virtual learning where they were challenged to keep up or reach their goals. The ‘Summer Slump’ is a common occurrence. When students take a couple of months off, many regress and forget critical components. As an educator, daily learning throughout the summer months with guided help makes a significant impact.
If you want to know the secret to avoiding the ‘Summer Slump,’ here are my tips:
Have a plan: A simple 20 - 30 minute per day engagement can make all the difference. The key is to have a plan, and our tutors provide that. Many students like to do their work in the morning to knock it out and get on to more fun activities. Consider between 8:30 am - 9:30 am. Make it a part of their daily routine, so they expect it and embrace it as “normal.”
Set achievable goals: As you implement a daily discipline, our tutors regularly see core skills increase. We can also revisit concepts they may not fully understand in math and preview into the upcoming school year to get a head start on the content. In the first weeks of summer, let them choose a novel they want to read and aim to finish it by the end of the summer. Choose a math skill they want to focus on and master or one that they haven’t been taught yet to introduce new ideas. Small, achievable goals will help keep the learning process focused and provide a sense of accomplishment.
Have Fun: Summer is for having fun. Make choices that are fun, reward your kids each week when they finish their work. Most of all, let them know how proud you are of them by choosing to incorporate a little learning in their summer break!
One thing is for sure: When they return to school in the fall, they will be confident students and fully ready to engage in the upcoming school year!
Don’t fall into the ‘Summer Slump.’ We’re help to help and would be honored to work with your family this summer and help your kids stay ahead in their education journey.
