If you are like me, you are becoming fluent and more comfortable with the 'online learning' approach. There is no doubt that Covid-19 has changed everyone's life in one way or another. Our youth have been affected by having their traditional, in person learning, transition to a completely online environment. Just like remote learning has evolved, so have one on one tutoring sessions.
Here at beam Tutoring, we are fully engaged in the online tutoring process! Knowing this may be the 'new norm' for a bit longer, I wanted to share with you 5 main tips on how to make an online tutoring session effective.
1. Make a Quiet Space:
Deciding where you will have your online tutoring session is very important. You will want to make sure that the location you choose is in a place where you are not distracted by tv's, siblings, etc. You want to be completely focused on your tutor and engaged in the session at all times.
2. Make a Clean Space:
Just as you would in a traditional setting, it is crucial to have a clean space. An appropriate workspace would include your computer/tablet, a notebook, any printed curriculum and writing materials. Having a space that is neat and organized allows you to get the most out of your session. If all your materials are ready to go and in their place, you will not have to waste time during your session to find what you need. Before you start, make a list and make sure you are fully prepared before you log on to start your tutoring!
3. Make Sure to Keep the Same Tutor:
I am a firm believer in this tip. When you have a student that establishes a relationship with a tutor, they become motivated to want to do their best. They will strive to please and make them proud. One of the main reasons this makes it so successful is that there is no lost time each time they meet. When they log on to a session, they can immediately jump into where they left off the last session. The tutor is able to assess learning and know where and what topics the student is struggling in. Having online sessions requires tutors to be fully prepared for sessions as well. When working with the same student each week, they are documenting progress and mapping out their personalized path of learning. Having the same tutor allows for online tutoring sessions to be more effective than if your student is meeting with a different tutor each week. At beam Tutoring, your child will have the same tutor each and every session. We strongly believe this is an effective piece to the overall tutoring.
4. Make Eye Contact and Repeat:
When having an online session, you want to make eye contact with your tutor. It shows them that you are paying attention and are committed to the learning. This also allows you to hear the instruction and listen to what they are saying. Another tip to help with online tutoring is to repeat what the tutor is instructing or telling you to do. This makes you understand what they are asking of you and reassures them that you know what they are asking you to do. If you are making eye contact and repeating what they are asking you to do, your online tutoring session will be much more successful.
5. Make Sure to Share:
Sharing materials is a huge part of online tutoring! If there are things that the tutor expects you to complete, they will be able to email/text them to you prior to the session so that you and him/her will have the same materials on your table to look at. They can also share websites/online documents to pull up on your computer. When you are tutoring online, you must have the same 'work' in front of you. This will make everything more fluent and the tutoring session will be very smooth.
Overall, if you are incorporating and practicing each of these 5 steps, you will have a successful online tutoring session!
