Summer is here! We made it through perhaps one of the most challenging school years we have ever experienced! As we begin to plan out our summer, I want to share with you 5 essential reasons to incorporate tutoring in your summer routine!
1- Bridge the Gap:
Summer is the absolute best time to fill in on any missed material/knowledge from the previous year. There may have been a concept in math that your child didn't fully understand. There may be a writing style that your child just cannot seem to master. Whatever it may be, summer is the perfect time to go back and review/master those topics!
2- Keep a Routine:
If you are anything like my kids (and me), we thrive off of a routine! Establishing a daily and weekly 'academic learning' time has proven itself to be successful. We typically like to have our mornings for our school time, but it really can be what works best for your family. If you have tutoring sessions set for a specific day and time, this will ensure that your child is thriving at the same time in keeping a routine. Sometimes, when we get off of a routine, it is harder to adjust once the school year begins. Having a routine during the summer really provides an atmosphere for academic success!
3- Practice Executive Functioning Skills:
This one is so important. If you haven't read my blog post about Executive Functioning Skills, take a few minutes to read that as well. These skills do not come natural for so many kids. It takes practice to fully grasp the concept of them. Summer is a great time to practice organizing, time management, study skills, test taking skills etc! Working with a tutor can ensure that your child is consistently practicing these skills. When they start their coursework in the fall, it is much easier to incorporate and apply those skills to the content they are presented.
4- Reading Comprehension:
You have heard your child's teachers encourage them to read over the summer. Simply having your child read for 30 minutes a day is a wonderful idea. However, how are you able to tell that they are fully comprehending what they are reading? Having a tutor read alongside your child, asking them questions, challenging them with reasoning, etc makes a huge difference in their reading growth! We want to make sure that what they are reading each day is being absorbed and understood. This will not only improve thier reading skills, but it will also establish a confidence within your child when it comes to their overall reading experience.
5- Get Ahead:
Most all students know what to expect in the upcoming school year. Public schools have a Standard Course of Study that lays our what the school year looks like in very specific detail. Private schools will also have access to a detailed plan for each grade level. I would advise all parents to take the time and look at what the upcoming school year will bring. Previewing material will allow students to know what is expected of them and the chance to start working ahead. Tutors are a great asset in this process. They can look at the upcoming material and make lesson plans to work with your child in these specific subjects. Your child can go ahead and start learning the material before the school year even starts! If there is something they aren't quite grasping, they can take the time to slow down, dive deep, and really master that topic. When the school year starts, your child will have a confidence in subjects and really be able to shine in the classroom!
Overall, summer is an incredible opportunity for students to learn! If you are interested in getting started in summer tutoring, we are here to help! Contact me with any needs you may have. Stay safe, and Happy Summer!
